The Smith family has been drawing a livelihood from their farm in the edge of North Carolina’s Piedmont for many generations. Chris’ grandfather grew tobacco in their farm; his father, Mr. Myron Smith, converted the farm to a plant nursery in 1978 and became gradually invested in strawberry farming and in receiving visitors interested in hands-on farming experiences. Chris and his brother are now exploring opportunities to grow sustainably farmed ingredients for local chefs. Today, three generations of the Smith family draw their livelihoods from their farm, collaborating in the day-to-day operation and management of the farm growing seasonal fruits and vegetables, ornamental and perennial plants, and free range chickens and eggs.
Chris invites visitors to join him in informal walking tours of his family’s farm. This tour of about one hour you will get a behind the scenes experience of the workings of the family farm. You will feed chickens and goats; will look at beehives used to aid in pollination of the plants and crops; and will get a detailed explanation on how Chris sustainable farming fresh and delicious ingredients for local chefs. During the visit participants will pick some farm products to take home - there is always something in season.
