With Tom Brody

Tom has been organic gardening since the 70's and eventually purchased a large grazing farm in the Allegheny mountains of Virginia in the mid 1980's. There, he raised a garden, and most importantly, his three daughters. They all became avid organic growers.  They raised bees, planted blueberries, strawberries, asparagus, vegetables, made maple syrup, and kept horses, goats, sheep, and chickens.

Tom owned and operated an outdoor school offering hands-on workshops in natural building, gardening, rural living skills, and environmental education. He also owned an eco-retreat on the farm which provided guests a unique destination to connect to the mountains and the natural world.

Since relocating to the region of western NC, he is currently the owner/operator of Rise Up Rooted and manages a small organic growing project south of Black Mountain. The business is supported by local farm-to-table restaurants, tailgate markets, grocers, and local neighbors. Every day is full of projects, and growing healthy, nutritious organic greens and vegetable is the main goal.  Tom likes to wrap up his days with a refreshing jump in the river and appreciation of the surrounding diversity.

Come join Tom and friends, as he gives you a first hand experience on the principles of organic gardening, growing in hoop houses for season extension, farmscaping, and permaculture. You will also explore the riparian zone of the river that flows through the property and learn about wild edible and medicinal plants.  Optional overnight stay at the river camp…bring your camping gear..(think car camping!). This experience lasts approximately 60 min.
