This journey takes our guests to the heart of Eastern North Carolina’ local food gem, the town of Kinston and its surrounding farms in Lenoir and Greene Counties. This journey is designed as 2.5 days of intimate food and farming experiences hosted by the network of people that support Vivian Howard’s efforts to rekindle community and food culture in her hometown.  Our guests will enjoy delectable meals in Vivian’s restaurants as well as intimate traditional country farm meals with the select farmers. In addition, our guests also venture to local small farms to have hands-on experiences with the farmers that dedicate their lives to growing fresh and delicious ingredients for Vivian.

The journey begins on a Friday evening with dinner at the Boiler Room in Kinston where the casual ambiance adds to the evident focus on local seasonal ingredients. During dinner you will get a behind the scenes conversation with the chef to find out how she sources from the farmers you will meet during the weekend.

Saturday morning the journey continues on Brothers Farm with a 2-hr biscuit-making breakfast lesson with Ms. Lillie followed by a hands-on farming experience with Warren Brothers, where you will help him harvest produce that will be used to prepare your dinner that evening in Chef and the Farmer.  The day will be filled with hands-on experiences in local farms and then after some time to rest you will enjoy a delectable dinner at the Chef and the Farmer.
On Sunday morning you will have a old time farm breakfast/brunch and a tour of a centenary farm and a little extra time to soak in the idyllic farm landscapes surrounding Kinston before you start your trip back home with a renewed appreciation for the skill, devotion and relationships that sustain the Vivian’s renowned revival of Southeast NC’s delicious food.



These chefs and farmers will welcome you to the realities of their daily lives by involving you in experiences such as :

  • Engaging in a friendly conversation with a celebrated chef while enjoying a delectable meal at her restaurant

  • Doing light farming work with the farmer that supplied the produce for your dinner

  • Enjoying a picnic in an urban garden while learning farming and cooking tips from local celebrated chef

  • Chatting with a local foods champion while walking to restaurant from your hotel

Your hosts will include :

  • Small farmers who devote their lives to producing fresh and organic produce and meat for their community and for select chefs

  • Celebrated farm-to-table chefs committed to supporting local small farmers and to bring the best flavors and textures from fresh local ingredients

We work with local people who are passionate about their culture and their community and who are eager to earn some income from interacting with visitors. As a result, visiting a community through one of our P1t Journeys creates local economic development opportunities and helps elevate local cultures and identities.
